So I’ve been doing further research into sheers, and I think I’ve found the balance.
Hot:

(Left to right: Carolina Herrera, Valentino (thanks Aisha for those two), La Perla)
Not:

(Left to right: Vera Wang, Pollini, Phi [Spring 07])
(All photos from Autumn 08/09 unless otherwise stated)
Conclusions:
- In general, sheer pants just don’t work.
- Keep it to one part of the outfit. Sheer sleeves work well; so do capes. Not so for an entire almost-see-through ensemble.
- If the entire piece is sheer (e.g. the Chloe shirt in the previous post or the Carolina Herrera shirt), make sure that it’s somewhat fitted (in the case of shirt sleeves, rein in the sleeve ends). You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a curtain.
For those of us too shy to try it, go for sheer stockings, no longer the faux pas they were just a few seasons ago.
